MusicNews news by country and genre
An aggregator of world music news. It pulls RSS feeds from specialist publications and Google News across 47 countries, identifies the artists mentioned in headlines through MusicBrainz and outputs a country and genre for every story — so the feed can be sorted by country, genre and source. Alongside is a feed of physical releases: vinyl, CDs and cassettes from Bandcamp, Discogs (including 20 countries separately) and Toolbox Records, with filters by format and source. I came up with it and design it myself.
01 / what it is
Music news is scattered across dozens of publications — MusicNews gathers it into a single feed you can sort
To follow music you normally have to go around Pitchfork, Billboard, Rolling Stone, NME and another dozen sites. MusicNews puts their feeds into one stream and adds what they lack: for every story it determines the artist's country and genre. As a result you can look at, for example, "techno only", "Japan only" or "Resident Advisor only" — and switch between these slices in one click. A separate feed collects fresh physical releases — vinyl, CDs and cassettes — with the same filters by format and source.
I extended the news feed with Google News Music: 47 countries — from the US, Britain and Russia to Japan, Korea, Brazil, India, China, Turkey and the Middle East — each in its own language, with correct query encoding for Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic and Russian. For Discogs releases, 20 countries and three formats (vinyl, CD, cassette) are now polled separately, and the RSS parser copes with invalid publication dates without crashing the whole import. Google News gives a many times wider reach than editorial publications, but also more noise — so instead of source quality tags a more reliable solution emerged: every Google News story first goes into a moderation queue and is published only after confirmation.

03 / how it works
From a news headline to a country and genre: the classification pipeline
The hardest part is not collecting RSS but understanding who a story is about without making mistakes. Headlines are written in Title Case, so the naive heuristic "capitalised words = a name" catches "Manager", "Live" or "Various Artists" — real (if junk) entities in MusicBrainz. That is why a list of exceptions for common words and known placeholders runs before recognition.

04 / moderation
Google News gives reach, moderation gives quality
Since the source is so wide, a review queue stands between the feed and the reader: Google News stories are not published automatically but first go to , where a person makes the decision.

Along the way I tidied up the Discogs link: releases now store /, and titles like "Artist — Release" tie a release to its artist more accurately.
05 / reach and stack
Real data and predictable infrastructure
Sources: Pitchfork, Stereogum, Consequence, Billboard, Rolling Stone, NME, The Quietus, Resident Advisor, Brooklyn Vegan, Zvuki.ru and InterMedia. Built on Next.js and TypeScript, data through Prisma: SQLite for local development without setup, Postgres in production. Feed crawling is idempotent and runs on cron, so the feed updates itself.

Roadmap
- Real Postgres in production — as soon as database access is available; the migration is already described in .
- API sources besides RSS: YouTube Data, Spotify, NewsAPI.
- An LLM classifier as a fallback for ambiguous headlines.
- Separate pages by artist, country and genre; multilingual support.
- Selected licensed sources from social networks.
